Antmicro joins the OpenROAD Initiative as Principal Member to spearhead open source silicon design tooling development

Expanding on a long history of technical contributions to the OpenROAD toolchain, Antmicro has officially joined the OpenROAD Initiative as a Principal Member to advance open source silicon design tooling and enable a collaborative and interoperable ASIC design ecosystem. Alongside industry and academia members including Google, Precision Innovations, and UC San Diego, Antmicro will continue to develop, maintain and improve open source ASIC design tooling, including but not limited to OpenROAD itself, enabling fast turnaround design feedback, rapid design space exploration and shortening both human and agentic development and verification loops.

Bringing transparency and accessibility to chip design

The OpenROAD Initiative (ORI) is a nonprofit public benefit corporation, dedicated to the stewardship, governance, and growth of the open source digital design tooling ecosystem, which strongly aligns with Antmicro’s strategy and long-term objectives focused on bringing the benefits of open source tools and workflows to the chip design space. By bringing together members from both industry and academia, ORI aims to not only advance the open source ASIC development process, but also ensure transparency and accessibility.

With Antmicro lending its expertise in the areas of open source ASIC tooling, architectural exploration, design verification and silicon prototyping, ORI continues its mission to expand the OpenROAD ecosystem, focusing on long-term sustainability and enablement of new, agentic-friendly workflows.

“As a longtime technical contributor to the OpenROAD project, Antmicro has consistently proven their commitment to advancing the open source ASIC design tools ecosystem. We’re excited to officially welcome their open source hardware and software expertise to the OpenROAD Initiative as we work together to accelerate our shared vision: making chip design open and accessible to all,” said Aaron Cunningham, representing Google in the ORI Governing Board.

“Antmicro is excited to support OpenROAD Initiative in order to enable unprecedented, open innovation in silicon design,” said Michael Gielda, Co-Founder and VP Business Development at Antmicro and now member of the ORI Governing Board. “With a long history of assisting silicon customers in improving productivity and enabling innovation in silicon design flows by building on open source tooling, we are dedicated to expedite those possibilities for both established vendors and emerging silicon players.”

Facilitating OpenROAD-based flows

The OpenROAD project, ORI’s flagship project originally launched in 2018 by UC San Diego as part of the U.S. DARPA Electronics Resurgence Initiative (ERI), provides tools and flows for RTL-to-GDSII design that have already resulted in many successful tapeouts. By enabling automated architectural exploration and prototyping of silicon, OpenROAD strives to lower the entry barriers for efficient chip development.

Antmicro has been helping early adopters of OpenROAD-based flows in projects ranging from enablement of mass open source silicon design through the SkyWater Shuttle program to emerging silicon workflows such as Google’s XLS toolchain. As interest in OpenROAD and its industrial use grows, Antmicro has been supporting customers by improving the toolchain’s performance and introducing new features, especially for large and complex designs. These include topics such as improving execution time, implementing automatic clock gating and improving resynthesis. By joining ORI, Antmicro doubles down on its commitment to the open source-driven innovation in the ASIC design space and the OpenROAD ecosystem as a whole.

About the OpenROAD Initiative and OpenROAD Project

The OpenROAD Initiative, Inc. is a California-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides governance, stewardship, and coordination for the OpenROAD ecosystem. The OpenROAD Project is an open source, autonomous digital chip design toolchain that democratizes semiconductor design, enabling a complete RTL-to-GDSII flow in less than 24 hours with no human in the loop. Grounded in academic research and referenced in over 500 peer-reviewed publications, OpenROAD has lowered the barriers to hardware innovation, enabling thousands of students, researchers, and startups worldwide to design and manufacture chips.
